Segugio Italiano

Segugio Italiano Temperament

The Segugio Italiano is a medium-sized Italian scent hound with a lifespan of 11 to 13 years and a weight range of 40 to 62 pounds, possessing a distinctive blend of working tenacity and gentle companionship. As a breed with an energy level of 5 out of 5 and maximum exercise needs of 5 out of 5, daily life revolves around satisfying their profound physical and mental endurance. They are enduring dogs, built historically to follow game over demanding, rugged terrain, meaning they will not easily tire during long outdoor excursions. They are also highly adaptable to various climates, making them versatile companions for outdoor enthusiasts. This boundless stamina is coupled with a highly driven nature; when on a scent trail, their focus is absolute and their prey drive is exceptionally strong. Owners will quickly notice their vocal personality, characterized by a resonant voice and a barking level of 5 out of 5, which they use naturally to communicate while working. Despite this intense working persona, they transform into affectionate companions when relaxing with their familiar human family. However, their independent heritage as scent hounds means they are not always eager to please, possessing a moderate trainability level of 3 out of 5 that demands patient and consistent guidance. Because they are not apartment-friendly and cannot be trusted around other non-dog pets, daily life requires a dedicated, active routine in a secure environment. A typical day involves structured, vigorous exercise to channel their drive, followed by warm, quiet moments where their loving side shines through. Ultimately, their independent, vocal, and driven characteristics harmonize into a loyal but free-spirited companion for those who can truly match their tireless pace.
